Lab 2: Climate Picture Story
Clear skies over the campus of Oakland University on Wednesday, Sept. 29 2021. Even though it cannot be seen, climate change is everywhere.
An empty lemonade bottle being recycled on Tuesday, Sept. 28 2021. Reducing the world's carbon footprint is one of the ways to prevent climate change.
Oakland University student Abigail Ferguson poses on Monday, Sept. 27 2021. "The biggest problem is that some people don't believe in climate change because they cannot see it happening around them".
Oakland University students going about their day on Wednesday, Sept. 29 2021. The abnormally warm temperatures in September could be the result of climate change.
When I was younger I used to think climate change was just the world getting hotter but since I could not actually see it happening it did not bother me. I was always taught in school to recycle, and I thought it was just so the wilderness was clean. Now I know better.
This past summer I worked in a zoo and we would educate the guests about conservation and how climate change affects the animals in the wild. In the year 2019, seven animals went extinct due to habitat loss caused by climate change. We need to do a better job of taking care of our planet.
"Global warming is projected to commit over one-third of the Earth’s animal and plant species to extinction by 2050 if current greenhouse gas emissions trajectories continue." -Center for Biological Diversity
We need to realize that this planet does not just belong to us as humans. It also belongs to thousands of plants and animals who cannot save it themselves. Humans are the cause of climate change but we also need to be the solution.
The easiest way for everyone to contribute to saving the planet is to cut emissions. Some ways of doing this would be to:
Invests in renewable energy such as solar, wind or hydroelectric
walk or bike to work or school instead of driving or taking the bus
Carpooling
energy-saving lightbulbs
washing cloths with cold water
installing solar lights
adjusting thermostat
getting a home energy audit
